When to Consult a Doctor: Recognizing Serious Interactions

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following after taking doxycycline with alcohol: severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, bloody or black stools, difficulty breathing, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), severe dizziness or lightheadedness, or unexplained bruising or bleeding. These symptoms could indicate serious liver or other organ damage.

Signs of Allergic Reaction

Allergic reactions to doxycycline are possible. Contact your doctor or seek emergency care if you develop hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. These are signs of a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. A rash, itching, or fever also warrant a doctor’s visit.

Medication Interactions

Doxycycline can interact negatively with certain medications, including some antacids, blood thinners, and oral contraceptives. If you are on other medication, inform your doctor before starting doxycycline. Unusual side effects while taking both medications together require immediate medical advice.
