The Importance of Sun Protection with Retinoids

Use sunscreen daily, with an SPF of 30 or higher, regardless of weather. Retinoids increase sun sensitivity, making your skin more prone to sunburn and long-term sun damage like premature aging and hyperpigmentation. This heightened sensitivity lasts even after you stop using retinoids.

Broad Spectrum is Key

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen; this protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper, causing wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays cause sunburn. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Beyond Sunscreen

Limit sun exposure, especially during peak hours (10 a. m. to 4 p. m.). Seek shade whenever possible. Wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, to further shield your skin.
