Cyprus’s intense sun demands proactive sun safety. Here’s how to protect yourself during popular activities:
Hiking in the Troodos Mountains
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, long-sleeved clothing. This provides better protection than sunscreen alone. Use a high SPF (50+) broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplying every two hours, especially after sweating. Carry a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection. Hydrate consistently; carry at least two liters of water. Plan your hikes for the cooler morning or late afternoon hours.
Beach Time
Seek shade under umbrellas or trees between 11 am and 3 pm, the sun’s most intense period. Apply waterproof, high SPF sunscreen generously 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming or towel-drying. Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Water Sports
Water reflects the sun, intensifying its effects. Therefore:
- Use a waterproof, high SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 30) specifically designed for water activities. Reapply frequently. Wear a rash guard or swim shirt for added protection. Consider a waterproof hat. Stay hydrated before, during, and after water sports.
Cycling Tours
Cycling exposes more skin to the sun. Consider these points:
- Wear a cycling jersey with UV protection. Use high SPF sunscreen on exposed areas, including your face, neck, and arms. Wear a cycling helmet and sunglasses. Plan your cycling route to include shaded areas whenever possible. Carry water and snacks.
Remember:
Sunstroke is a serious condition. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, or high body temperature.
