Mucinex contains guaifenesin, an expectorant. It thins mucus by altering its viscosity. Specifically, guaifenesin increases the movement of water into the mucus, making it less thick and sticky.
This increased hydration allows your body to more easily clear the mucus from your airways through coughing. The result is less congestion and easier breathing.
Important Note: Always follow the dosage instructions on the Mucinex packaging. Drinking plenty of fluids while taking Mucinex further enhances its effectiveness in thinning mucus.
While Mucinex helps thin mucus, it doesn’t treat the underlying cause of your congestion. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.
